The stretch of coastline from Cape Ochiishi to Cape Nosappu has always been an interesting one for the seabird watcher. It is well worth finding a sheltered spot on either cape and spending time 'scoping out to sea at any time of year.
Birding opportunities have become significantly better and easier with the advent of offshore tours using adapted fishing boats based out of Ochiishi and Habomai. These tours run mostly at weekends depending on the weather. The Ochiishi Nature Cruise travels along the coast to the offshore islands of Yururi and Moyururi (no landings). The main target species here in summer are Red-faced Cormorant, Rhinoceros Auklet and Spectacled Guillemot, with chances also of the scarce (in Japan) Tufted Puffin, though the range of other species seen is also impressive, including shearwaters and albatrosses in season, and a wide range of alcids and seaduck in winter.
