The stretch of coastline from Cape Ochiishi to Cape Nosappu has always been an interesting one for the seabird watcher. It is well worth finding a sheltered spot on either cape and spending time 'scoping out to sea at any time of year.
Birding opportunities have become significantly better and easier with the advent of offshore tours using adapted fishing boats based out of Ochiishi. These tours run daily and travel along the coast to the offshore islands of Yururi and Moyururi (no landings). The main target species here in summer are Tufted Puffin and Spectacled Guillemot, though the range of other species seen is also impressive, including shearwaters and albatrosses in season, and a wide range of alcids and seaduck in winter.
