The Hokkaido race of the wide-ranging Eurasian Red Squirrel, is fairly common here, but finding it at locations where it can be photographed is not easy. During early spring (March) they are busily gathering nesting material to line their breeding dens in tree cavities and there in a few weeks time the females will give birth to their litters. One famous location to search for them is in Nopporo Forest Park; a convenient site close to Sapporo, one renowned for birdwatching and described in A Birdwatcher's Guide to Japan.
